Choosing the Optimal Time for Your First Orthodontic Appointment

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that patients have their first examination by an orthodontist at the age of 7. Orthodontic treatment usually begins between 8 and 14 years of age. Some problems are easier to correct if they’re treated right away. Some people can benefit from two phases of treatment whereas other patients may only need one phase of orthodontic treatment. Dr. Smith, in our Cobb County offices at Powder Springs and Marietta, can determine if treatment will be needed and can tell you the best time to start.

This gives your orthodontist the best chance to:

  • Guide jaw growth
  • Lower the risk of trauma to protruded front teeth
  • Correct harmful oral habits
  • Improve appearance and self-esteem
  • Guide permanent teeth into a more favorable position
  • Improve the way the lips meet
